Confidence and Peace for Each Day

Your love, Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies.
Your righteousness is like the highest mountains, your justice like the great deep. You, Lord, preserve both people and animals.
How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings.
They feast on the abundance of your house; you give them drink from your river of delights. – Psalm 36:5-8, NIV

God’s love is meteoric, his loyalty astronomic,
His purpose titanic, his verdicts oceanic.
Yet in his largeness nothing gets lost;
Not a man, not a mouse, slips through the cracks.

How exquisite your love, O God!  How eager we are to run under your wings,
To eat our fill at the banquet you spread as you fill our tankards with Eden spring water.
You’re a fountain of cascading light, and you open our eyes to light.  – Psalm 36:5-8, The Message

Every day deserves a chance. No matter the gloom at sunset on the day before or the morning clouds of the new day sunrise, every day is a fresh beginning.  Each day is created from scratch and reveals new hope because our Lord is about “new” and “now”.

Even though his lovingkindness is astronomic and oceanic, his gaze is microscopic to the smallest detail.  Fear lasts a moment. Loneliness passes with someone’s smile and embrace.  I am blessed and will be a blessing … no matter what! Nothing overshadows His care.  It is impossible to get beyond His reach or out of his sight.  Nothing slips by unnoticed.  His justice reigns in the heavens.  His faithfulness, at day’s end, will satisfy my heartfelt yearnings.  No boundaries confine the One who makes His home in the expanse of the universe.

Great is your mercy, O God!  I long for your justice and fairness. One day I will sit at His heavenly banquet, relax tableside with Him, and sip from fountains of exotic treasures.  How comforting to feel His tender care and invigorating to watch His universal righteousness unfold. Praise my God, now, and as this day unfolds … regardless of these moments.

Now, here is what really happened! I am writing these words of encouragement to you … and for me because this is most certainly not how I feel!

My morning began with sleepless anxiety two hours before the alarm sounded.  There is too much to do and too little time to make things happen!  Deadlines are suffocating.  Commitments and responsibilities cut short my breath. Unfortunately, when I exercised to ease my stress, I re-strained my back muscle.  (So much for stress relief through working-out.)  Give me Ibuprofen, now.  I went to ride my bike. The back tire was flat because my goo-patch didn’t work.  Even the air compressor was “on strike” when I tried to refill the tire!

My wife’s horses are in the wrong pasture eating grass that will make them sick.  Tape-breaks in the electric fencing need repair. My wife should arrive any time now… My desk has three layers of books on it.  My plumber was a “no-show” to replace the water heater today.  Oh boy (!), my wife will be thrilled with cold showers again tomorrow. The pump house door knob is busted and won’t open.  Ironically, my devotional thought focus is on “Peace and Confidence”.  Laughingly, I am asking myself, “Is it too early for a beer?

Next Steps

So, there you go.  This is my meditation … for me … and for you.  God is great.  He is faithful to bless this very messy day for His honor and glory … if I let Him.  I resolve to let Him do it.  Amen.

Charles Spurgeon’s admonishes us, “God’s sovereign goodness comes without a pause. There are no miscarriages in divine grace. Never let any forgetfulness, negligence, or delay be in your gratitude or in the obedience that springs from it.  In your health, in your sickness, in your wealth, in your poverty, in your joy, and in your sorrow, may your theme be God’s lovingkindness and helpfulness.”
